Jaime Aquino to Discuss Academic Concerns in the Latino Community

LAUSD’s Highest-Ranking Instructional Leader, Dr. Jaime Aquino, Featured on Two National Spanish Language Programs to Discuss Academic Concerns in the Latino Community

He will address Latino educational crisis in a panel discussion and town hall

LOS ANGELES— Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) highest-ranking instructional leader, Dr. Jaime Aquino, who is the Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, will be featured on two national telecasts about the plight of education in the Latino community.

One program features Dr. Aquino, along with California state senator Kevin De Leon and UCLA Professor Dr. Patricia Gándara, analyzing the educational crisis that Latinos face in California. The program, which airs tonight at 6:30 p.m. on Univision, also attempts to explain why it is essential for one of the largest states in the nation promote education among Hispanics. 

The second program, a town hall meeting, is scheduled for broadcast Saturday, Oct. 13, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. PST on Univision. It will feature Dr. Aquino and other leading educators, politicians, students and teachers as they discuss ways of bridging the gap between educators and Latino parents to raise high school graduation rates, making college accessible to Latino youth.  

Some topics for discussion include:

 • Preparing Hispanic students for the 21st century. What should they learn?

• How can teachers support the success of Hispanic students?

• How can school leaders help Hispanic students?

• Steps for effective parent / teacher Interaction

• A parents’ responsibility for helping to educate at home

• Role models and a need for more Latino teachers and school administrators

• Preparing for college in middle and high school

• Affordability and student debt
