Jazz It Up!

WHAT:         The Beyond the Bell’s Monk Institute Jazz Ensemble will perform at the 17th annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival. They will play jazz classics by Oliver Nelson, Duke Ellington and, of course, Thelonious Monk.

WHO:         The band is comprised of 24 talented jazz students, who attend Bravo, Chatsworth, Eagle Rock, El Camino, Hamilton high schools, Reed Middle School and others in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The performers have been rehearsing since April to keep the spirit of jazz alive in Los Angeles. The group is led by Tony White and J.B. Dyas.

WHERE:        The festival is located at the intersection of 42nd Street and South Central

Avenue at the historic Dunbar Hotel.

  WHEN:        Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 11:30 a.m.

WHY:        The Beyond the Bell Monk Institute Jazz Ensemble began three years ago, allowing students to pursue jazz with other like-minded musicians outside of their home high schools. Many great jazz artists such as Dexter Gordon, Charles Mingus, Buddy Collette and others have come through LAUSD. This will be the band’s third-consecutive appearance at the Central Avenue Jazz Festival. The band most recently performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival.
